OriginLab continues to add support for map analysis and map-based charting, something that has been a focus for the last several versions. With our newly-released Origin 、 OriginPro 2022b, we have added a new “Bar Map” graph template that plots a simple column or bar chart at user-specified geographic locations, on an easily-added map background.

View a video: “Create a Bar Map Plot” on YouTube.
The “Bar Map” template will plot either as a column chart or a bar chart depending on your preference (Plot Details > Map tab > Orientation group) and you can use controls on the same tab to set column/bar width and height.
The same data can just as easily be plotted as a “Pie Map” — with a pie chart replacing the column or bar chart. In case you missed it, pie maps were added in the previous version, Origin 2022.
What do I need to get started?
Bar maps and pie maps share a common and straightforward data requirement:
- Longitude and latitude coordinates (designated as X and Y, respectively) for a number of places of interest — cities, countries, etc. Most longitude values will be on a -180 to 180 scale but Origin’s world map can work with a 0 – 360 scale, as well.
- Two or more designated Y columns containing measurements of some quantity of interest. These columns should contain measurements that you want to compare/contrast for each of your longitude and latitude coordinate pairs.
- Once you’ve plotted your Y columns against your longitude and latitude pairs, you’ll use the Insert menu to add a map background (Insert > World Map/Map of China/Continental US, etc.).
- You can also plot over an imported GeoTIFF image, as in the case of the “Protein Consumption” map in the opening paragraph. Adding a GeoTIFF background is not complicated and is demonstrated in one of the Origin 2022b sample projects available by pressing F11 and searching the Learning Center Graph Samples tab for 2022b.
