Working with large datasets often requires repeating the same data across multiple worksheets—whether for analysis, visualization, or reporting. In past versions of Origin, this meant copying data, using column formulas, or linking columns—all of which can increase project size due to duplication of data, and slow performance.
With the new Mirror Column feature in Origin, you can reference data across the project without duplicating it—making your projects more efficient, lightweight, and easier to manage.
What is a Mirror Column?
A Mirror Column is a direct reference to another column’s data. Instead of copying values, the mirror column dynamically reflects the source column.
You can create mirror column(s) by simply copying source columns (CTRL+C) and then using the forming a Paste as Mirror Column(s) context menu (CTRL+ALT+V) on the destination column(s).
A few key things to note:
- The destination and source columns display an icon on the top left of the column header to indicate that the column is involved in a mirror relationship.
- The Fx row of the destination column displays a specific syntax to indicate which column is the source for the mirror operation.
You can set up a mirror column by simply typing this syntax into the Fx row of the desired destination column, as a way to set up the mirror relationship. - The destination column is obviously locked from editing, as it simply reflects the current data in the source column.
- The destination column is set to follow the same type as the source column, such as text & numeric, text, date, time etc.
Why use Mirror Columns?
1. Reduce Project File Size
In the past, users relied on:
- Copy and paste
- Column formulas
- Copy Columns To
All of these approaches duplicate data and increase workbook and project file size.
With mirror columns:
- Data is stored only once
- Referenced everywhere else
The result: Significantly smaller project files and faster loading times!
You can clearly see this difference in the Project Explorer (PE), where workbooks using mirror columns occupy much less space compared to duplicated data.

2. Visual Indicators and Easy Navigation
Mirror columns are easy to identify:
- Special icons appear on both the source column and the mirror column
- Hovering over the icon shows a tooltip indicating the relationship
- Right-click context menu on the icon allows allow you to:
- Go to Source Column
- Go to Mirror Column(s)
This makes tracking dependencies simple and intuitive.
You can also view all of the mirror column relationships in the Project Browser dialog. More about this later.
Mirror an Entire Sheet
In addition to individual columns, you can also mirror an entire worksheet into another workbook.
This is especially useful when:
- You want to reuse a dataset across multiple books
- You are organizing projects by analysis stage
- You want to maintain a single source of data while working in different contexts
Instead of copying a full sheet (which increases file size), mirroring allows the destination worksheet to dynamically reference the source worksheet—keeping your project compact and synchronized.
Managing Mirror Columns
There are several options for managing mirror columns:
Remove Mirroring
You can remove the mirror relationship at any time by the following:
- Click on the mirror icon on the destination column and select the Remove Mirroring context menu.
- Click on the mirror icon on the source column and select Remove All Mirrors or Remove All Mirrors in Sheet. This will remove the mirror relationship for all existing destination columns that refer to these source columns.
Convert Existing Columns to Mirror Columns
If you have an existing project with column formulas directly referencing other columns, or destination columns set up using Copy Columns To… dialog, you can convert these to mirror columns to reduce redundancy.
Use the Worksheet: Convert to Mirror Columns dialog to convert such columns to a mirror relationship, the current worksheet, workbook, folder, or entire project level.
This is particularly useful for large projects where:
- File size has grown significantly
- Load times are slow
Convert Mirror Columns Back to Formulas
There are cases where you may want to revert mirror column relationship, such as when
- Sharing projects with users with older versions
- Working with source columns that have a filter applied (which is not supported currently for mirroring)
In these cases, you can convert mirror columns back to standard column formulas. Click on the mirror icon of the destination column and select the Convert to Column Formula menu.
Creating Mirror Columns from Similar Sheets
When working with multiple sheets that share the same structure, you can quickly generate mirror columns across them using the Create Mirror Columns from Similar Sheets tool.
This is ideal for:
- Multi-sheet experiments
- Repeated measurement sets
- Standardized data workflows
In the image below, all normalized spectra from a set of worksheets have been summarized into a single destination sheet with a common X column, using mirror relationships:

Project-Level Insights
You can use the Project Browser dialog in Origin to view and manage mirror columns from anywhere in the project, such as clearly identify source and destination mirror columns, listing only mirror columns, removing mirror relationship from all selected columns, and converting mirror relationships to column formula.

A More Efficient Way to Work
Mirror Columns introduce a more modern, efficient approach to handling repeated data in Origin. By eliminating duplication and improving transparency, they help you:
- Keep projects lean
- Work faster
- Maintain cleaner data relationships
Whether you’re managing large experiments or building complex analysis workflows, Mirror Columns can make a noticeable difference.
Try Mirror Columns in your next project and experience a smarter way to work with data in Origin.
